§ 01 · ASKED & ANSWERED
01What's the best flooring system for my garage?
For most homeowners, we recommend a double polyaspartic system — two coats of polyaspartic with optional decorative flake in between. It's the fastest to install (you can walk on it the same day), it's UV-stable so it won't yellow, and it handles hot tires, chemicals, and daily abuse for 15+ years. If you want the classic speckled look with full flake coverage, go with an epoxy base coat + flake broadcast + polyaspartic topcoat. Our guide at /learn/best-flooring-system-for-your-project walks through every option.
02Can I do this myself, or do I need a contractor?
You can absolutely do it yourself. A two-car garage takes a weekend and costs roughly $860–1,100 in materials (compared to $3,500–5,000 for a professional install). The key is getting the prep right — grinding the concrete, testing for moisture, and making sure the surface is clean and dust-free. We have a complete step-by-step guide at /learn/diy-garage-floor-step-by-step that covers everything from the shopping list to parking your car back on the finished floor.
03How do I prep my concrete before coating?
Prep is the most important step and the one most people rush. You need to clean the floor, degrease any oil stains, grind the surface to create a profile the coating can grip (CSP 2–3), test for moisture, and patch any cracks. If moisture is present, you'll need an MVB primer (RS-MVB) before anything else goes down. Our full prep guide is at /learn/how-to-prep-concrete-for-epoxy.
04How much product do I need for my garage?
Each 2 gal polyaspartic kit covers about 300 SF per coat, each pre-pigmented Crown Polymer 8355 base coat kit covers about 400 SF, and a 40 lb box of decorative flake covers about 500 SF at full broadcast. For a standard two-car garage (~400 SF): a clear double-poly system needs 4 polyaspartic kits (2 per coat), and a full flake system needs 1 base coat kit, 1 box of flake, and 2 polyaspartic kits for the topcoat. Easiest path: answer three questions on our DIY page and we'll spec your exact kit with the math done for you, then send it over for a quote.
05What's the difference between epoxy and polyaspartic?
Epoxy is the thick, strong base coat — it bonds hard to concrete and builds film thickness. But bare epoxy yellows in sunlight. Polyaspartic is the topcoat — UV-stable (won't yellow), faster curing, high gloss, and more chemical-resistant. Most systems use epoxy on the bottom and polyaspartic on top. Or you can skip epoxy entirely and do a double polyaspartic system, which is simpler and faster. Check our system comparison at /learn/best-flooring-system-for-your-project.
06Can I put urethane over polyaspartic?
No — this is one of the most common mistakes we see. Urethane will not bond properly to cured polyaspartic and will peel, sometimes in large sheets. Always topcoat polyaspartic with more polyaspartic. We cover all the do's and don'ts of coating compatibility at /learn/which-coatings-do-not-mix.
07How long before I can walk on it / park on it?
With our standard cure polyaspartic (RS-POLY-90), you can walk on it in 4–6 hours. With the fast cure (RS-POLY-90F), walk-on is 1–2 hours. Light use (moving things back in) at 24 hours, vehicles at 48–72 hours, and full chemical cure at 7 days. Epoxy base coats take longer — 12 hours walk-on for standard cure, 6 hours for fast cure.
08Do your products come in colors?
Yes. Our Crown Polymer 8355 base coat comes pre-pigmented in five colors (White, Black, Tan, Light Grey, Dark Grey), our polyaspartic topcoats ship clear, and decorative vinyl flake comes in eight pattern blends for the classic speckled look. You can also add pigment to a clear epoxy base or use metallic pigment for a 3D swirled effect. Our guide at /learn/how-to-mix-color-into-epoxy-and-polyaspartic covers ratios, techniques, and common mistakes.
09What does a Technical Data Sheet (TDS) tell me?
The TDS is a one-page spec sheet for each product — it has coverage rates, cure times, film thickness, strength ratings, and test methods. The numbers that matter most for homeowners: solids content (higher is better — ours are 90–100%), pot life (how long you have to work), coverage rate (300 SF per kit for both our poly and epoxy), and UV stability. Our plain-English breakdown is at /learn/understanding-technical-data-sheets.
10What if my concrete has moisture problems?
Moisture is the #1 reason garage floors peel. Do the plastic sheet test: tape a 2-foot square of plastic to the floor, wait 24 hours, and check for condensation underneath. If it's wet, you need our MVB primer (RS-MVB) before any coating goes down — it's rated to 12 lb moisture vapor transmission. The full moisture testing process is in our prep guide at /learn/how-to-prep-concrete-for-epoxy.
11Do you sell to homeowners or just contractors?
Both. A big chunk of our orders go to homeowners doing their own garage or basement. The products are the same — professional-grade kits that contractors use. You can buy any in-stock kit straight from the product page. Contractors running volume should apply to our contractor program for wholesale pricing and dedicated support.
12Where do you ship and is it really free?
Free shipping nationwide on every order, no minimums and no flat-rate surprises at checkout. We ship anywhere in the mainland USA. Orders ship UPS Ground in 1–2 business days, and typical transit is 2–5 business days depending on your location. Unopened product can be returned within 30 days — see our Returns page for details.
